Reflect on the pieces and outfits you gravitate towards and that make you feel your best.

Which type of items do you prefer? Do you feel your best wearing a feminine look, or perhaps a professional one? Would you rather wear minimal clothes or items that have more details?

Is your ideal outfit more relaxed and casual, or tailored and formal? Do you prefer classic silhouettes, modern minimalism, or vintage-inspired designs?

Curate a list of three words (or terms) that represent your preferences. Ideally, all of the items in your closet should relate to one of those words.

By identifying your style, you can make more intentional choices that align with your overall aesthetic. This will make getting dressed easier, more intuitive, and more enjoyable.

Your personal style is unique to you and should make you feel comfortable and confident. Remember that your style can evolve as you grow, and change with your taste and personal image.

Start With a Closet Cleanout

The first step to building an elegant wardrobe is decluttering your current closet to ensure it aligns with your current self and style. Cleaning your closet will give you a clear view of what you own and what you need to invest in.

Start by taking everything out of the closet and sorting it into keep, tailor, donate, and sell piles.

Discard worn, damaged, or outdated clothes that no longer fit you, or that simply don’t align with your style. Donate or sell items that are in good condition but don’t serve you anymore.

Remove anything that doesn’t bring you joy, confidence, or fits your elegant personal brand.

Don’t keep things for hypothetical future events; if you haven’t worn something in a while it’s likely unnecessary.

I’m a huge believer in investing and saving, and I generally try not to spend a lot on my wardrobe. So, I try to sell everything I can when I clean out my closet. Any earnings from selling unworn items are recycled back and used for new ones.

This method helps me curate my closet and add new pieces without guilt and also prevents me from being lazy and keeping/donating items I can otherwise sell.

You will see that a well-organized and decluttered closet will help make the most out of your current items, making daily dressing easier and more enjoyable.

Especially after a closet cleanout, it’s natural to want to shop for new pieces to fill the gaps. And while sales can be tempting, it can easily lead to an impulse purchase that doesn’t truly fit your wardrobe or needs.

Buying new items, just because they’re on sale, usually leads to unplanned purchases and cluttering your closet with things that are low quality, don’t fit you well, wrong size, or simply don’t match other pieces in your closet.

Instead of shopping sales indiscriminately, focus on buying pieces that you truly love and need. This approach will ensure that every addition to your wardrobe is intentional and valuable, and contributes to an overall sense of elegance.

It doesn’t mean that you should never buy anything on sale, I will always encourage you to save money when possible.

When I say, ‘avoid sale shopping’, I actually mean – be careful you are not spending your hard-earned money on items you don’t really want and need, just because you feel like you’re saving when it’s on sale.

Ideally, any items should be both a ‘need’ and a ‘want’.

High-quality pieces may come with a higher price tag, but their longevity makes them worthwhile investments that can ultimately save you money in the long run.

The cost per wear of an item is what truly matters.

Be careful when you shop and check the quality first. You can find cheaply made items that cost a lot of money, and vice versa.

I bought many of my favourite items on second-hand platforms (like Vinted). It usually allows me to save on brands I know and love.

Even the most beautiful garment can look scruffy and messy if it doesn’t fit well. Of if you wear the wrong size. Tailoring your clothes to fit your body shape perfectly is a simple yet effective way to elevate your overall image.

Having proper tailoring will also create a flattering fit and boost your confidence. Don’t hesitate to take your pieces to a professional tailor to achieve that perfect fit.

A few years ago, a new item of clothing used to put a smile on my face almost immediately; the feeling of wearing a new article of clothing was exhilarating and fun. Whenever I purchased (or got) a new dress, I brought it and wore it to wherever I went – until I got another, newer, dress, and tossed my “old” one aside.

For you, the new dress might be a phone, a makeup item, or even a relationship. Is the feeling of happiness and excitement of the newness familiar to you? Do you also feel that “new is always better”?

In my ongoing journey toward an elegant lifestyle, I’ve learned the importance and the benefits of quality over quantity. I choose to be fastidious and to value quality in all aspects of life: in the books I read, in the clothes I buy, and in the people I spend time with.

The mindset of preferring quality over quantity helps me to live more efficiently and intentionally, and to add simplicity to my life.

Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance Coco Chanel says beautifully.

Elegance, therefore, is not defined by abundance, but in fact – the opposite is true. Elegance comes from moderation and quality rather than from excess and quantity.

The meaning of quality over quantity:

Perhaps you have already heard the phrase ‘quality over quantity’, but what does it actually mean?

Because the phrase clearly signifies a preference for better things over a plethora of things, it is somewhat self-explanatory. With that being said, the phrase ‘quality over quantity’ holds a deeper meaning; it is the perception that mere quantity does not make you happy.

To choose quality over quantity is to release yourself from the endless race to more commodities that is modern consumerism, and to learn the importance and joy of simplicity.

Four reasons why you should choose quality over quantity:

Quality saves money:

When it comes to material items, investing in quality can often save you money – even if the initial cost is higher.

Nowadays, we tend to spend money and buy clusters of cheap items that we do not need and perhaps even forget to use. When we invest in quality, we naturally stay away from impulse sale-rack shopping and from purchasing cheap ‘disposable’ items. Shopping for quality means to only purchase the things that we really need.

Additionally, quality items last longer and do not require frequent replacing, and therefore have a better return on investment.

A quick note: be aware that investing in fancy premium brands does not ensure that you’re purchasing quality-products. When you purchase premium brands you sometimes pay for the brand name rather than the quality.

Learn how to spot quality-items. You will discover that the price tag is not the main indicator of quality, and that quality can be found within any price range.

Quality saves time and energy:

As elegant women, we carefully select how to invest our time and energy; those are our most valuable resources, which are simply too valuable to be spent carelessly.

By focusing on quality over quantity we dedicate our time and energy only to a fewer, and more significant, things.

Firstly, we own fewer material items (of a high-quality) that need to be cared for, and therefore invest less time shopping and replacing cheap products.

Secondly, we select our activities thoughtfully. For example, we would prefer to read one excellent and important book rather than various gossip articles.

Lastly, we choose our companions carefully, and understand that a few good friends are far more valuable than many acquaintances.

Train yourself to recognize quality in all areas of life, and exclusively choose the best within the abundance of choices. I can assure you that by doing so you will have more time and energy to spend on the things that really matter to you.

Quality supports sustainability:

By choosing quality over quantity, and by rejecting the modern consumeristic culture of ‘buy cheap, throw away, buy more’, we reduce the burden on our environment.

Indeed, our personal effect is fairly small, but I believe that even the slightest changes are important and valuable. Furthermore, our collective impact can be very significant. Add elegance to your life by making conscious and sustainable decisions daily, and by choosing quality over quantity.

Choosing quality over quantity is an act of self-love:

Choosing quality over quantity is undeniably an act of self-love. You deserve the best of all things. Enjoy the best material items, experience the best activities, and surround yourself with the best people.

Do you prefer to wear a comfy cashmere sweater on a regular basis, or to change many cheap ones repeatedly? Which of those options would make you feel more elegant and luxurious? Remember that for either option the financial expenditure can be approximately the same.

By not wasting time, energy, and money on low-quality and on quantity, we open ourselves to precious resources and gain the ability to focus on things that really matter to as.

In fact, the formula to achieving a polished appearance is quite simple; it doesn’t require you to invest a lot of time or money, but rather to acquire a bit of knowledge, make a little effort, and do some preparation in advance.

In this article I will share the simple (yet effective) ways that will help you look polished, elegant, and classy at all times.

Awareness is key:

One thing that all women who manage to look elegant and refined have in common is self-awareness.

An elegant woman is always aware of her appearance; she tidies up her sleeves and collar, refreshes her perfume, and fixes her hair.

Check yourself occasionally throughout the day and make adjustments when necessary. Tuck your shirt in neatly, tidy up your sleeves, refresh your breath, and fix your makeup. The simplest and smallest adjustments can significantly affect your appearance.

Always be well groomed – simplify your grooming routine:

You might not like to hear this, but in order to look groomed and polished you must invest a bit of effort in hygiene, and in, well… grooming.

As an elegant woman you should always sort out the basic components of grooming. Have a simple and sleek haircut (that you can easily style and maintain), keep your nails filed and clean, and groom your eyebrows (and any other body hair for that matter) regularly.

If you struggle to properly follow your grooming routine, reevaluate it, simplify it, and discard unnecessary tasks; your routine shouldn’t be too complicated, expensive, or time consuming.

Remember that less is more, and opt for easy yet effective steps to help you simplify your grooming routine. For example, keep your nails neat and translucently polished rather than bold and brash; the latter are especially hard to style and maintain.

Maintain a proper fit:

To look as elegant and refined as possible, maintain a proper fit amongst all the items in your wardrobe. Without the correct fit, even the most stylish and expensive outfit will look messy and scruffy.

Sometimes all that’s required for your clothes to suit you is a simple hem or a tiny pinch in the waist. Pay an occasional visit to the tailor; you will be surprised by how quickly and drastically the simplest things can transform your appearance.

Build your wardrobe essentials:

Have you ever sat in front of your bursting closet and thought to yourself “I have absolutely nothing to wear”? The feeling is familiar to us all.

We are taught to update our wardrobe according to latest trends and to the colors and styles of the season. We rush to the stores, spend our money, and often end up with various styles that are hard to combine.

The solution is actually quite simple. To look polished, all you need are a few reliable key pieces to form the foundation of your closet; those pieces should be timeless and easy to mix and match with other, trendier, items in your closet.

Steam your clothes:

If you want to achieve a polished appearance, you must purchase an iron and learn how to properly use is.

Creased, or wrinkled clothes will never look polished (and neither will dirty ones). Make a habit of ironing or steaming your clothes before you hang them in your closet.

Wear neutral-colored clothes:

Indeed, you can achieve an elegant look by wearing colorful clothes, but achieving that look becomes much easier through wearing clothes of neutral color. When worn distastefully, colored clothing can appear cheap and messy.

Clothes of neutral colors, especially black and white, tend to look polished, sleek, and elevated, and can be styled year-round.

Choose any of the colors black, white, or beige for your clothes; those versatile hues will always get the job done.

A quick tip: to look refined, wear a monochromatic shade, or different shades of the same color, from head to toe.

Take care of your shoes:

Have you ever heard the old saying “you can tell a gentleman by his shoes”? Well, as much as that aphorism applies to men, I think that it is also applicable to women.

Showing attention detail, by selecting elegant shoes, shows your ability as an elegant woman to take care of the things that you love. Wearing clean and well-polished shoes can create a good impression in all settings and occasions. On the contrary, wearing crumbling and dirty shoes (especially for a business setting) can give the impression that you do not think highly of yourself, or of those around you.

No matter how flawless your hair is and how expensive your dress is – your shoes can instantly change your look from polished to sloppy.

To look refined from head to toe, take care of your shoes and clean them regularly; get them reheeled, resoled, and completely replace them when necessary.

Wear structured outerwear:

The easiest (and fastest) way to look refined in fall and winter is to wear a structured coat; coats are the most visible item that we wear, but, sadly, they are often overlooked.

Acquire a light belted trench coat for fall, and a heavier wool coat for winter. Look for a structured fit and high-quality fabrics that help to instantly create a polished appearance.

Practice good posture:

When you see an elegant woman, you notice not only her outfit, but also the way she carries herself. It is not only the woman’s physical appearance that looks polished and put-together; it is she, as a whole, who is put-together. An elegant woman derives her polished look from her outfit, her hygiene, her grooming, and especially her posture.

To look elegant, make an effort to keep your posture tall and upright. Do not slouch – roll your shoulders backwards and straighten your back.

Put on one item that makes you feel good:

A polished appearance is also affected by your attitude. When you get dressed in the morning, put on one item that makes you feel ethereal, expensive, and elegant. The monetary price of this magical item does not matter; what matters is the way it makes you feel and think.

Pick a simple gold necklace for a day in the office, your favorite pumps for a dinner outside, and your luxurious perfume for a special night inside the house.

My go-to “feel good” item is my Chanel No.5 – a simple spray that can make me feel elevated, proud, and get me ready for a new day.

The Cashmere Jumper

As temperatures drop, cashmere jumpers are my go-to for staying warm and stylish. Cashmere jumpers are timeless wardrobe essentials for any classy woman.
