Remember, drying out your skin and skipping moisturiser may be tempting, but it can backfire and lead to even more oil production.

Dry Skin:

Have you ever applied your thickest, richest moisturiser, only to feel like your skin is still dehydrated?

Consider this tip: think of your skin as a sponge. If you cover a dry sponge with a thick layer of moisturiser, would it become more hydrated? Just like with a sponge, it’s essential to ensure your skin is well hydrated first, before sealing in that hydration with your moisturiser.

Build your skincare products from thin to thick. The number of products (and layers) you use, will depend on your skin type and preference.

Start with a toner or essence (an optional step, yet one of my favourites), which has the thinnest consistency. In this step, aim for products that will balance your skin. I usually like using 2 to 3 layers of a soothing toner for my combination and acne-prone skin.

Move on to a serum or ampule, which usually has a thicker consistency. In this step, target your main skin concern with the correct ingredients. I usually opt for using a vitamin C serum. After your skin feels supple, complete the routine by sealing the hydration with a moisturiser (and of course, a sunscreen during the daytime).

Daily Sunscreen: Your Skin’s Best Defence

One essential step in any skincare routine is the consistent use of sunscreen. Regardless of weather or season, protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is crucial for maintaining its health and youthfulness. Sunscreen not only prevents sunburn but also guards against premature ageing and dark spots.

Incorporate sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (I personally prefer SPF 50) into your daily regimen, applying it generously to all exposed areas, including your face, neck, and hands. Reapply every two hours, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure.

Finding the right fragrance can be quite complicated; use the tips in this article to decide upon your unique scent.

What is a signature scent:

A signature scent is a scent that is closely associated with you and your identity; it is a way of leaving a unique mark wherever you go. Having a signature fragrance means that you wear it so often that eventually it represents you.

Why should you own a signature scent:

With today’s accessibility to affordable, mass-produced perfumes, you may think that having a signature scent is a bit outdated. With that being said, having a signature scent is a classy, elegant approach to the concept of fragrance.

A signature scent is a woman’s perfect accessory; it creates an invisible aura that lingers behind you and subtly allows you to express a little bit of your personality, character, and individual style.

According to my philosophy, each and every one of us nurtures and develops her own personal brand.

I own my brand; everything that I am, everything that I do, and everything that I present is a part of my identity and my quality. The way I speak, the way I carry myself, the way I dress, and even the way I smell greatly affect the way that others perceive me and identify me.

The right signature fragrance is an everlasting fingerprint that people you encounter remember you by.

How to find your signature scent:

Let’s face it: choosing a signature fragrance can often be a daunting experience; to do so, you stand in front of lines of shelves lined with bottles and bottles of ‘Parfum’, ‘Eau de parfum’, ‘Eau de toilette’, and ‘Cologne’. The plethora of choices and scents is confusing, and leaves you with a question: which fragrance is the perfect choice?

These five tips will show you how to find your signature scent and avoid experiencing a disappointing panic-purchase.

Define your style:

Before you start the search for the ultimate signature scent, think about your personal brand and style. Define who you are and what you want your fragrance to express about you.

Do you want a classy and formal scent, or a sweet and playful one? a fragrance that will turn heads while you walk into a room, or perhaps one that will be more subtle and intimate?

A signature scent should be able to implicitly share a bit of your story.

It is quite easy to give in to temptation and to buy the new, trendy fragrance that the salesperson suggests. Be mindful and make sure that your fragrance of choice reflects your personal style, brand, and identity.

Test each perfume:

Once you’ve defined your style, head to your favorite fragrance store and test, test, test! Try out as many scents as possible before you decide which one to choose.

While it’s important to test a variety of scents, it is also important to do so in moderation. After testing about three products, our ability to capture the true nature of a fragrance decreases significantly. Test three fragrances and then take a short break to refresh your nose.

A quick tip: test the fragrances on a blotter to keep your wrists clean for your favorite one.

Don’t rush – always leave and return later:

After you’ve tested several scents on the blotter and found one that pleases you, spray a tester on your wrists.

Let’s stop and address a common misconception: don’t rub your wrists together! Rubbing perfumes ruins the delicate molecules of the substance and corrupts its quality. Spray both of your wrists lightly and just leave them be.

Once you’ve sprayed your preferred tester, leave the store and wear the fragrance for the rest of the day. Take your time; don’t rush to buy the whole bottle then and there.

Fragrances reveal their notes over time; the scent that you first smell in the store will change throughout the day. Explore the scent’s notes and longevity for a full day before you spend your hard-earned money.

Treat perfumes as an investment:

High-quality perfumes are not cheap; they often contain rare ingredients and oil extracts that raise the price. On the other hand, cheaper fragrances often include common ingredients or synthetic chemicals.

Your signature scent is a long-run investment in your personal brand; the amount that you are willing to spend on it is entirely up to you. Do your research and make sure that you completely love the fragrance and its quality before you purchase a bottle. Treat yourself with an investment piece that will serve you well; you won’t regret your pricy purchase and you’ll happily throw any other cheap perfume that was bought on a whim.

To me, a well-made fragrance that makes me feel incredible is worth every penny.

Build a collection of signature scents:

You don’t have to settle on just one signature scent. Our mood fluctuates and the weather changes throughout the year, and therefore sticking to one scent might be too limiting.

You may want to wear a light scent for spring and summer, and a warmer scent for autumn and winter. Perhaps you like to wear a floral scent during the day, and a musky scent at night. The decision is totally up to you.

Create a small collection of scents that you can choose from. You can separate your signature scents according to season, daytime, or any other criterion. .

Remember to limit yourself to the right extent. When you have a large collection of signature scents, you run the risk of having no signature at all. My personal recommendation is to keep two to four fragrances per collection.

An interesting fact: if we smell the same scent every day, our nose adjusts to the scent and we stop noticing it. Getting used to a scent can happen with perfumes, scented candles, and even with the natural scent of our home.

When our nose adjusts to our signature fragrance, we can suddenly feel unimpressed with the scent; we may even apply too much. Owning a small collection of signature scents can solve this problem.

Give your nose a “break” from time to time by wearing a different fragrance or occasionally skip using a perfume for a day.

Maintain a neat hairstyle

When we think about an elegant woman, we immediately imagine a well-dressed, graceful, woman that surely presents a neat hairdo.

A messy and sloppy hair is never a good choice for any woman. The messier your hairstyle is – the worse you appear.

The first, and most important, step in hair grooming is to get a hairstyle that suits the shape of your face and that is easy to style and maintain. Time is the most essential resource that we have in our life – choose to not waste it on hair styling. Your hair shouldn’t require hours and hours of styling, straightening, curling, etc.

When you find the hairdo that suits you and your lifestyle best, make sure to maintain it regularly. If you have colored hair, preserve its color and get your roots done when needed.

Lastly, dedicate several minutes each day to wash, comb, and style your hair. Even the best haircut and the healthiest hair can look frumpy and messy without frequent cleaning and styling.

A quick note: regardless of whether you prefer to wear your hair long or short, natural or dyed, and up in a ponytail or loosely down – make sure to stay away from any childish styles. Remember that elegant women are grown-up women, and not girls. Our hairdo must match our personality and qualities.

Take care of your skin

Having a flawless and glowing skin is surely every woman’s dream, but perfect skin can be quite hard to maintain. There are many factors that affect the condition of our skin.

If we have good skin, everything else just becomes easier. Our makeup looks better, our legs appear smooth in our new shoes, and our overall appearance seems spotless.

Taking care of your skin should be a part of your personal grooming routine. Follow these basic tips to maintain a healthy and appealing skin:

• Establish a good skin care routine that fits your skin type. As an initial step, make a habit of washing your face and hands regularly.

• All skin types need hydration. If you have an oily skin, choose to moisturize it with a light-wight cream or serum.

• Protect your skin by applying SPF every single day – even in the winter. You might not notice any difference immediately, but trust me on this issue. Exposure to the sun can take a heavy toll over years.

• Drink plenty of water. I struggle with this tip myself – drinking enough water is still difficult to me. If you have the same problem, try to zest a bit of lemon into your water glass; this simple trick does wonders to my water drinking habits.

• Don’t forget your lips. The skin of our lips is extremely sensitive and needs care. Choose a lip balm that has SPF and wear it regularly. Also, exfoliate your lips when you want to achieve a fresh, healthy look.

• Eat healthy food. Our skin is greatly affected by the food that we choose to eat. If you struggle with your skin, try to consume less sugars, oils, dairy, and fast foods.

Wear simple makeup

• When you apply makeup, always aim for a light, fresh, and healthy appearance.

• Choose to use less rather than more. It is quite easy to go overboard and to end up with a heavy “cake-face”, which is definitely not elegant.

• Make sure that the colors of the makeup match your skin tone and suit your complexion. Carefully select every one of your makeup products: your foundation, concealer, lipstick, and eyeshadow. A red lipstick with a cool tone that suits your friend perfectly may not match your warm complexion, and vice versa.

• Save your darker and bolder looks for nighttime, and keep your makeup during the day natural, clean, and simple.

Keep your nails clean and groomed

Personal grooming for nails means keeping them clean and shaped.

Dirty or chapped nail are never pleasant – not for us and especially not for others; cleaning our nails is pretty basic.

You can choose to keep your nails short or somewhat long, and either polished or natural, according to your preferences and lifestyle. If you like the polished look, make sure to stay in the elegant and neutral range and to avoid bold statements and colors.

My favorite look is a simple, clear, and protective coat. You can also opt for a light nude or pink, or a delicate French manicure. To me, nail embellishments and ostentatious nail structures are never elegant. For example, you’d never catch a female member of the British royalty wearing anything but neutral or pink nail polish – and that’s a rule!

Also, do not forget your toenails.

Hair removal

Hair removal is one of the basic and critical steps of grooming, and it is one of the most important steps in my routine. Personally, if I neglect to take care of my body hair (god forbid), I immediately feel slopy and messy. I absolutely love the feeling of smooth legs and shaped eyebrows.

Regardless of whether you prefer shaving, threading, waxing, laser treatments, or a combination of those methods, make sure to maintain a steady routine.

Basic body parts for hair removal:

• Upper lip

• Eyebrows (shaping)

• Legs

• Underarms

• Bikini lines

• Arms (if you have dark or long hair)

Of course, the list can be longer (or a bit shorter) according to your personal body hair.

If you want to save time and make your hair removal routine easier, your best option is laser treatments. Laser treatments may not be cheap, but they pay off in the long run.

Another great (and more affordable) option is to invest in an IPL hair removal device for a comfortable, at-home removal.

Personal grooming through body and health care

Personally, I believe that a healthy lifestyle should also be a part of our personal grooming routine.

Taking care of our body by eating healthy, resting, exercising, and working towards a better posture is essential to our appearance and to the way we carry ourselves on a regular basis.

The effect of feeling good about our body is as important as getting a new manicure or haircut, and most likely even more so. The way we carry ourselves greatly affects the way others see us. Even the most polished and refined woman can look sloppy if she doesn’t have a good posture or confidence in her own body.

Add “body and health care” to your must-do personal grooming routine; it will provide the last (but necessary) touch to your look and feeling.

My personal grooming conclusion

Ladies, remember that your grooming routine should work for you, and not the opposite. Your routine shouldn’t be too complicated, too time consuming, or too expensive.

When it comes to our personal grooming, less is definitely more. Opt for easy, yet effective, steps to help you simplify your grooming routine. Reevaluate your current routine, discard unnecessary steps, and make gradual changes until you become the best possible version of yourself.

Keep in mind that the journey to self-betterment and elegance is continual and never-ending. Maintain a steady, yet effective, pace on the way, and enjoy the road.

In fact, the formula to achieving a polished appearance is quite simple; it doesn’t require you to invest a lot of time or money, but rather to acquire a bit of knowledge, make a little effort, and do some preparation in advance.

In this article I will share the simple (yet effective) ways that will help you look polished, elegant, and classy at all times.

Awareness is key:

One thing that all women who manage to look elegant and refined have in common is self-awareness.

An elegant woman is always aware of her appearance; she tidies up her sleeves and collar, refreshes her perfume, and fixes her hair.

Check yourself occasionally throughout the day and make adjustments when necessary. Tuck your shirt in neatly, tidy up your sleeves, refresh your breath, and fix your makeup. The simplest and smallest adjustments can significantly affect your appearance.

Always be well groomed – simplify your grooming routine:

You might not like to hear this, but in order to look groomed and polished you must invest a bit of effort in hygiene, and in, well… grooming.

As an elegant woman you should always sort out the basic components of grooming. Have a simple and sleek haircut (that you can easily style and maintain), keep your nails filed and clean, and groom your eyebrows (and any other body hair for that matter) regularly.

If you struggle to properly follow your grooming routine, reevaluate it, simplify it, and discard unnecessary tasks; your routine shouldn’t be too complicated, expensive, or time consuming.

Remember that less is more, and opt for easy yet effective steps to help you simplify your grooming routine. For example, keep your nails neat and translucently polished rather than bold and brash; the latter are especially hard to style and maintain.

Maintain a proper fit:

To look as elegant and refined as possible, maintain a proper fit amongst all the items in your wardrobe. Without the correct fit, even the most stylish and expensive outfit will look messy and scruffy.

Sometimes all that’s required for your clothes to suit you is a simple hem or a tiny pinch in the waist. Pay an occasional visit to the tailor; you will be surprised by how quickly and drastically the simplest things can transform your appearance.

Build your wardrobe essentials:

Have you ever sat in front of your bursting closet and thought to yourself “I have absolutely nothing to wear”? The feeling is familiar to us all.

We are taught to update our wardrobe according to latest trends and to the colors and styles of the season. We rush to the stores, spend our money, and often end up with various styles that are hard to combine.

The solution is actually quite simple. To look polished, all you need are a few reliable key pieces to form the foundation of your closet; those pieces should be timeless and easy to mix and match with other, trendier, items in your closet.

Steam your clothes:

If you want to achieve a polished appearance, you must purchase an iron and learn how to properly use is.

Creased, or wrinkled clothes will never look polished (and neither will dirty ones). Make a habit of ironing or steaming your clothes before you hang them in your closet.

Wear neutral-colored clothes:

Indeed, you can achieve an elegant look by wearing colorful clothes, but achieving that look becomes much easier through wearing clothes of neutral color. When worn distastefully, colored clothing can appear cheap and messy.

Clothes of neutral colors, especially black and white, tend to look polished, sleek, and elevated, and can be styled year-round.

Choose any of the colors black, white, or beige for your clothes; those versatile hues will always get the job done.

A quick tip: to look refined, wear a monochromatic shade, or different shades of the same color, from head to toe.

Take care of your shoes:

Have you ever heard the old saying “you can tell a gentleman by his shoes”? Well, as much as that aphorism applies to men, I think that it is also applicable to women.

Showing attention detail, by selecting elegant shoes, shows your ability as an elegant woman to take care of the things that you love. Wearing clean and well-polished shoes can create a good impression in all settings and occasions. On the contrary, wearing crumbling and dirty shoes (especially for a business setting) can give the impression that you do not think highly of yourself, or of those around you.

No matter how flawless your hair is and how expensive your dress is – your shoes can instantly change your look from polished to sloppy.

To look refined from head to toe, take care of your shoes and clean them regularly; get them reheeled, resoled, and completely replace them when necessary.

Wear structured outerwear:

The easiest (and fastest) way to look refined in fall and winter is to wear a structured coat; coats are the most visible item that we wear, but, sadly, they are often overlooked.

Acquire a light belted trench coat for fall, and a heavier wool coat for winter. Look for a structured fit and high-quality fabrics that help to instantly create a polished appearance.

Practice good posture:

When you see an elegant woman, you notice not only her outfit, but also the way she carries herself. It is not only the woman’s physical appearance that looks polished and put-together; it is she, as a whole, who is put-together. An elegant woman derives her polished look from her outfit, her hygiene, her grooming, and especially her posture.

To look elegant, make an effort to keep your posture tall and upright. Do not slouch – roll your shoulders backwards and straighten your back.

Put on one item that makes you feel good:

A polished appearance is also affected by your attitude. When you get dressed in the morning, put on one item that makes you feel ethereal, expensive, and elegant. The monetary price of this magical item does not matter; what matters is the way it makes you feel and think.

Pick a simple gold necklace for a day in the office, your favorite pumps for a dinner outside, and your luxurious perfume for a special night inside the house.

My go-to “feel good” item is my Chanel No.5 – a simple spray that can make me feel elevated, proud, and get me ready for a new day.

Typically, I am opposed to seasonal beauty-trends, and choose to wear various outfits regardless of the time of year – provided that the outfit suits the weather, of course. With that being said, I tend to make an exception with perfumes.

Perfumes are carefully formulated and quickly respond to temperature changes. While a lighter, fresher fragrance will work great during the summer, when the temperatures drops the scent might seem to fade, or even to become too “cool” and clean.

The best perfumes for winter are a bit heavier; they are as warm and comforting as a cup of hot tea in the snow; they are musky, woody, and maybe even spicy.

Below you will find my pick of the best elegant perfumes fo winter: they are the scents that will make you feel pulled together, powerful, fancy, or at ease. Some of those perfumes are conventionally classic, while others are more modern and edgy – there is something for everyone on the list.

Chanel Coco

Top notes: Bulgarian Rose, Mandarin, Coriander, Jasmine, Peach, and Orange.

Middle notes: Cloves, Orange Blossom, Rose, Mimosa, and Clover.

Base notes: Amber, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood, Opoponax, Civet, Vanilla, and Labdanum.

Coco Eau de parfum is an oriental-spicy fragrance that was created in 1984 by Jacques Polge. The fragrance was designed carefully with the intention of expressing the spirit and personality of Gabrielle Chanel herself and her love of the baroque style.

Despite the fact that it was released in an era of shoulder pads and big hair, Chanel Coco is a true masterpiece has managed to keep its wearability and a charming vintage quality to this day.

Nothing else compares to Coco on the market: it is rich and warm, yet floral, with a hint of spiciness; it is a well-blended, complex scent – the epitome of class and elegance.

Coco is a serious fragrance; it is suitable for a night at the opera, for which you’d wear a silk-wrapped dress and Italian leather pumps, but it is not too serious, and can equally fit a comforting evening by the fireplace, with a good book and your favorite cashmere sweater.

Because of its intense and warm scent, Coco is the perfect fragrance for fall and winter; use it sparingly – one or two sprays can last for hours.

Chanel Coco Noir

Top notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, and Orange.

Middle notes: Rose, Geranium, Jasmine, Narcissus, and Peach.

Base notes: Patchouli, Sandalwood, Olibanum, Tonka beans, Vanilla, White musk, Cloves, and Benzoin.

Chanel Coco Noir Eau de parfum was created by Jacques Polge Christopher Sheldrake, and launched in 2012. To me, Coco Noir is the grown-up sister of the familiar Coco Mademoiselle; the former has more attitude, more strength, and more confidence.

The scent of Coco Noir forms in my head a picture of a very elegant French woman; she is dressed head to toe in black and displays a sleek hairdo with a timeless red lipstick; she is both classy and sexy, both confident and feminine – an out of reach, mesmerizing, and graceful woman.

The name ‘Noir’ is a bit misleading. Indeed, Coco Noir is somewhat dark, but it isn’t your typical night-time fragrance; it’s a versatile fragrance that can be worn day or night, in a professional setting, and especially in days when you want a bit of extra confidence.

Chanel Coco Noir is definitely one of my go-to elegant perfumes for winter.

Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles

Top notes: Amber.

Middle notes: Vanilla.

Base notes: Patchouli, and Labdanum.

Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles is an oriental vanilla fragrance that was launched in 2012. The ‘nose’ behind the fragrance is Jean-Claude Ellena.

The scent of L’Ambre des Merveilles is very warm and is therefore a perfect fit for a chilly weather. The amber is softened by the vanilla, while the patchouli and labdanum add an interesting spiciness. Overall, Hermès L’Ambre des Merveilles is a gloriously crafted fragrance from top to bottom.

In my opinion, this perfume is the perfect scent for women who want to appear natural, women that manage to be classy, sophisticated, sensual, and elegant effortlessly.

L’Ambre des Merveilles’ scent is quiet and subtle, yet warm and comforting; it is not a “statement” perfume, but rather an easy to wear one. The scent is soft and projects an almost skin-like feeling; it is like a light and soft cashmere scarf rather than a chunky and thick wool sweater.

If you are looking for a scent with an elegant character that can be worn day to night and that fits most occasions, L’Ambre des Merveilles might be the perfume for you.

Bottega Veneta by Bottega Veneta

Top notes: Pink Pepper, and Bergamot.

Middle notes: Jasmine.

Base notes: Patchouli, Leather, and Oak moss.

The fragrance Bottega Veneta Eau de parfum was launched in 2011 by the Italian luxury house Bottega Veneta. The ‘nose’ behind the Bottega Veneta fragrance is Michel Almairac.

This product marks the first perfume from the fashion house, and signifies the house’s renowned leather goods; it’s described as a “leathery, floral chypre”.

Bottega Veneta perfume has a sharp opening that blends into a soft and creamy suede background, with a touch of sweetness; it is a scent for a confident and strong woman that knows what she wants.

The scent of Bottega Veneta is both noticeable and demure, both sophisticated and gentle: it is feminine, but not ‘girly’. This perfume is definitely for women who wear crisp button-up shirt, pantsuit, and high heels.

Dior Addict

Top notes: Mandarin Leaf, and Orange Blossom.

Middle notes: Jasmine Sambac.

Base notes: Bourbon Vanilla.

Dior Addict Eau de parfum by the house Christian Dior is an oriental floral fragrance that was launched in 2014 as a reformulated version of an old perfume. The ‘nose’ behind the Dior Addict fragrance is Francois Demachy.

If you want to make a statement, Dior Addict is the fragrance for you; it is rich without being flashy, and charming without being pompous.

Dior Addict starts with fresh and alluring top notes of Mandarin Leaf and Orange Blossom, reveals a soft, feminine heart of Jasmine Sambac, and settles into the warmth and comfort of Bourbon Vanilla

This fragrance is pretty, lady-like, and well-behaved; it is fitting for a celebration in a fancy French restaurant or an evening at the theater. Wherever you go, you will leave an elegant and seductive trail of vanilla scent in your wake.

Giorgio Armani Sì

Top notes: Cassis.

Middle notes: May Rose, and Freesia.

Base notes: Vanilla, Patchouli, Ambroxan, and Woody Notes.

Sì is a chypre, fruity fragrance that was launched in 2013 by Giorgio Armani. The creator of Sì fragrance is Christine Nagel.

I don’t usually gravitate towards sweet and fruity scents, and Sì is definitely not my cup of tea, yet it somehow gotten into my list. Besides being sweet, Sì is also rich, warm, aromatic, spicy, and, simultaneously, even a bit clean and “soapy”.

At first, you experience the perfume’s playful and girly, fruity scent, but the fragrance quickly transforms into a deeper and more sophisticated grown-up woman’s scent that is versatile enough to be worn both day and night.

Personally, I think that Sì is one of the most versatile and “lovable” elegant perfumes for winter.

Tom Ford Velvet Orchid

Top notes: Rum, Honey, Bergamot, and Mandarin Orange.

Middle notes: Orchid, Black Orchid, Jasmine, Hyacinth, Rose Oil, Heliotrope, Narcissus, Magnolia, and Orange Blossom.

Base notes: Sandalwood, Myrrh, Peru Balsam, Vanilla, Suede, and Labdanum.

Velvet Orchid is an oriental floral fragrance that was launched in 2014 by Tom Ford; it is a more subtle and refined version of the notorious Black Orchid perfume.

Through this perfume, stroll back into the world of old Hollywood drama, a world of velvet dresses and dashes of red matte lipstick; dip into a rich, warm, and sultry world of rum, honey, and vanilla.

Velvet Orchid is not your typical elegant perfume, and it is undeniably the most sensual perfume in this article. This fragrance is as sensual as wearing a long trench coat and black pumps; wearing it is the equivalent of displaying a power suit and a quality leather bag, and feels similar to slipping into a silk night gown with a glass of red wine on a velvet couch.

If you are looking for a fragrance that would make you feel as if you own the room before you’ve even walked in, Velvet Orchid might be just right for you.

Beware, those who spray light, modern fragrances five to six times will find themselves fighting for their lives in a battle of chemical warfare if they do so with Velvet Orchid; with this perfume, less is definitely more.

Cartier La Panthère

Top notes: Dried Fruits, Rhubarb, Strawberry, Anise, Bergamot.

Middle notes: Gardenia, Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Orange Blossom, Pear.

Base notes: Oakmoss, Musk, Patchouli, Leather.

La Panthère Eau de parfum by Cartier is a chypre-floral fragrance that was launched in 2014. The fragrance was created by the perfumer Mathilde Laurent.

Cartier is a world-renowned French company that specializes in luxury goods such as jewelry, watches, and, of course, perfumes. The panther genus has inspired Cartier’s designers since 1914, and La Panthère perfume is no exception.

With the scent of La Panthère, Cartier offers a unique new accord that combines a woman’s feline and feral side with her delicate femininity and sensuality. The result is less harsh than one would expect, but rather expresses the majestic strength of panthers in a tasteful and graceful way.

La Panthère opens with a quiet, soft, and fruity note, settles into a note of creamy white gardenia flowers, which are as ladylike as chiffon gloves, and finishes by turning into a base note of velvety musk and leather, which add an animalistic touch.

As with anything else be Cartier, La Panthère perfume captures the essence of elegance, sophistication, and femininity; it is a captivating perfume – a jewel in itself.

The beauty of perfume lies in the fact that the fragrant can be delicate and empowering, soft and seductive, fresh and feminine, and of course – elegant.

To me, perfume is a woman’s greatest accessory. I could wear the most fabulous dress, put on the most glorious heels, and display the most marvelous necklace, but without perfume I’d feel as if something were missing.

Perfume puts the finishing touch to elegance; it creates an invisible aura that follows you and lingers behind you; it is a slight detail that subtly allows you to share a little bit of your thoughts and character – silently, without words.

Indeed, perfumes have earned a special place in every elegant woman’s life; they make up an invisible, timeless enhancement that can emphasize and complete any personality or appearance.

I have chosen to dedicate a short series of articles to the subject of perfumes. In this first article, I will walk you through different perfume tips and hacks that every elegant woman must know.

Moisturize your skin

To make your fragrance of choice last longer, apply it to moisturized skin (preferably after a bath or a shower). If your skin is dry, the scent will fade faster because of a lack of moisturization to hold on to.

Many people recommend using Vaseline, but personally I prefer to use a regular body lotion – it is less sticky, and it gets the job done.

You can moisturize strategic places that come in contact with the perfume, or use the opportunity to treat yourself and moisturize your whole body.

Be careful with layering

Perfumes are carefully formulated. If you layer different scented products, you may accidentally deform the scent of your pricey perfume for the worse.

Try to replace your fragrance-based products with unscented versions (especially body oils and lotions): that way your fragrance of choice won’t be overpowered by other scents.

Get familiar with fragrance types

There are different types of perfumes, and each is designed for a different purpose; some are very strong and long-lasting, while others are light and refreshing.

Before you invest your money in buying a new fragrance, study the different kinds of perfumes according to concentration, and how the potency affects the longevity and intensity of the scent.

Parfum

Parfum is also known as ‘pure perfume’, ‘perfume extract’, ‘extrait de parfum’, or simply ‘perfume’.

Parfum is generally the most concentrated form of perfume available to purchase; this fragrance contains 20-40% of perfume oil.

Among all types of fragrances, Parfum has the strongest scent and the best adhesivity to the skin. Because of its performance and high concentration of perfume oil, Parfum commands the highest price tag and is usually sold in small bottles.

Eau de parfum

Eau de parfum or ‘parfum de toilette’, is one of the most common types of fragrances; it contains 10-20% of perfume oil, and therefore provides a slightly lower performance (in strength and longevity) compared to Parfum fragrances.

Eau the parfum is generally my go-to perfume choice: it’s a combination of good quality of product and a fair price tag.

Eau de toilette

Eau de toilette is a light fragrance composition with a 5-15% concentration of perfume oil. The fragrance’s strength and longevity are both less significant than those of Parfum and Eau de parfum, a fact that manifests in lower prices per bottle.

Because of its light and almost refreshing form, Eau de toilette fragrance is popular particularly during the summer season.

Eau de cologne

Eau de cologne, often simply called ‘cologne’, is a fragrance that contains 2-5% perfume oil, and generally only lasts for about 2 hours.

Eau de cologne is usually inexpensive and is often available in large sized bottles that are meant to be carried around and used throughout the day.

Less is more

As in everything else in elegance: less is more. Use restraint when applying perfume; its scent should be noticeable only to people that are physically close to you.

As I’ve mentioned in the previous section, perfumes have quite a large range of potency, and therefore applying the right amount of perfume can be a rather challenging task.

Every type of perfume contains a different concentration of fragrance. The more concentrated the fragrance, the stronger and longer lasting the scent, and the less perfume you need to apply.

Pay attention to the label of your perfume. Parfum should only require one to two squirts, whereas Eau de perfume can be sprayed two to four times (depending on the strength of your fragrance). With lighter perfumes such as Eau the toilette and Eau de cologne, spray the perfume up to five times and reapply it throughout the day if needed.

When in doubt, always choose less rather than more.

Wear your perfume on pulse points

Pulse points are areas on the body in which blood vessels are closest to the skin; those points are warmer than the rest of the body.

Body heat helps diffuse the fragrance (the same principle is used by essential-oil diffusers), which is why pulse points are an ideal location to apply your favorite perfume.

There are many pulse points that you can choose from: the sides of the neck, the collarbone, the wrists, the inner elbows, behind the ears, and even behind the knees.

Pick a couple of pulse points to apply your perfume to. You will notice that throughout the day the perfume will react to your body warmth, the fragrance will amplify, and the scent will diffuse gradually – leaving a gentle elegant aura wherever you go.

Choose your perfume points in relation to your clothing. For example, if you wear a classy turtleneck dress, you might want to spray your perfume behind the ears and on your wrists (rather than on your neck and inner elbows).

Don’t rub

A common perfume myth is that you need to mist your wrists with perfume and then rub them together. The truth is that rubbing your wrists does nothing to enhance the scent of the perfume – actually, it does the opposite. 

In fact, the friction that is created by the rubbing breaks down the molecules of the fragrance and changes the nature of the scent.

To preserve the integrity of your fragrance, and to ensure that it lasts longer on your skin, spray both wrists lightly and leave them be. This is one of my favorite perfume hacks.

Perfume storage

Perfumes are extremely sensitive; humidity, heat and dampness can easily break down their formula and weaken their pleasant fragrance.

Many people display their perfumes as a decorative piece in the bathroom. Indeed, perfumes are usually designed beautifully, but they should be only stored in a cool, dark places.

Perfumes can be quite an investment, so ensure their longevity by storing them in a “safe” place.

Surprisingly, the best place to store fragrances is in the box that they originally came in, away from the harsh light, and in a dry, cool room.

I keep my fragrances in a vanity drawer in me bedroom.

Get familiar with perfume notes

Perfumers and aromatherapists have adopted a musical metaphor to describe perfumes. The basic elements of every fragrance should be thought of as three sets of notes that are harmonized together to create a scent ‘accord’.

Like musical notes, fragrance notes add depth and complexity to the scent experience. The notes – top notes, middle notes, and base notes – unfold gradually as the ingredients evaporate, and so the scent changes over time.

Understanding the basic principle of perfume notes is key for any perfume lover, and it will help you find the scent that you truly love every time.

Top notes

Top notes are also referred to as ‘head notes’, and are the scents that one perceives immediately after applying a fragrance.

Top notes are made of light molecules; they arrive like a burst of scent and form the initial impression of a perfume, but are also the first to evaporate, thereby revealing ‘the heart’ of the fragrance.

Keep in mind: the scent that you smell at the store might differ once you leave.

Middle notes

Middle notes, also called ‘heart notes’, form the body of the fragrance; they are usually used to categorize and define the perfume family of the product.

The middle notes emerge after the top notes have faded away and can last for a few hours – they make up the strongest impressions of the scent.

Base notes

Base notes are the heaviest molecules in the perfume; they lay the foundation on which the perfume is built. Base notes help fix the fragrance to the skin and boost the adhesivity of the top and middle notes.

Base notes provide depth and fullness during the prominence of the middle notes of the perfume, but when the heart notes fade they take on a character of their own and give the last impressions of the fragrance.
